God doesn't want any gods before -- literally, above -- Him (Exodus 20:3) or even with Him. Many times, we put God first in our lives, but not God alone.
Ye shall not make with Me gods of silver,
neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.
--Exodus 20:23
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love
the other;
or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Ye
cannot serve God and mammon.
--Matthew 6:24
Mammon here means mammōnás, literally, the treasure a person trusts in.
Does God have the final say about your life and how you spend your money (tithes, offerings, giving to the poor)? Or does money dictate how you spend your money on the needs in your life? You cannot obey God's dictates concerning how to spend your money, and depend on your money to meet your needs at the same time. Tried it; it's really hard to do, as you are constantly torn between obeying God first
and trusting Him to supernaturally meet the needs in your life, or
first meeting the needs in your life and then obeying God after
everything else has been settled.
